It’s hard to be second best to a dream. It’s also hard to sit back everyday and see someone you love giving themselves to a dream with no more of an anchor to reality than three sharp swords that glinted angrily before a battle. It’s even harder not be selfish because you love that person and want to be their anchor to the world, because you’d do a much better job. After all, swords can’t give hugs, right? Swords can’t laugh or cry with you. Or hold a hand. And you can.
At least that’s what Luffy told himself when, in the dead of night, he threw all of Zoro’s weights overboard.
In the morning there would be shouting and Zoro might get mad at him, but he didn’t care. He wanted the old Zoro back. This Not-Zoro was going to have to leave. He’d let him stowaway on his ship long enough, it was time for him to go!
In fact, Zoro said nothing in the morning, just settled back for a nap in the warming sun. It was later on, in the dead of night again, that he cornered his captain. Brushing aside excuses that would have made Usopp’s lying heart wince he met the innocent stare with hardened eyes. He wanted to know why this had been done. To not get stronger was to one day perhaps come across someone else stronger than he was.
Another demanding glare and Luffy was looking at the ground.
Then he was looking up. Then the lips that haunted his dreams and nightmares softly pressed against his own. Then he pulled away and whispered, “Because I missed Zoro.”
Before another silence fraught with misinterpretation could fall, Zoro pulled Luffy close and whispered “I’m back buddy.”
And they cried.
