Title: Music of the Sea
Rating: G
Word Count: 290
Pairing: The Ocean-->Merry, Merry/Nakama
Topic: Senses

The waves of the ocean hum to a heady salsa tempo. Often it’s fast and furious, spinning, dipping, snapping. A shout of laughter and the shush a red dress makes while its owner beats a tattoo into the dance floor. Then it becomes slow, footsteps soften, hands meet, and hearts beat in unison as the still complex moves are made, but gentler now, with eyes closed, letting the music take over.

The perfect partner is always sought, the one who knows how to complement every movement, however subtle, but they are almost never found. Once, there was one who ignored the song of the sea entirely, who made her own tune, waltzing when the beat was quick and jumping when it was slow.

She pretended not to hear the crescendo of the waves, even when they towered over her head, instead listening for seven songs that could just be heard on the edge of consciousness. There were no lyrics to be heard, just the faint sounds melding to create a half-familliar beat. A beat that raced at such a speed not even the best dancers could keep pace. A speed that made the ocean’s seem lethargic at its fastest.

Shouting, wind, chatter, footsteps, stories, explosions; softer sounds of smiles, touches, kisses, hugs, glances, secrets. And throughout the ship’s song, the underlining back beat of laughter reveling in insane odds.

The ocean hears her voice reach out for them, strained, cracking, desperate, and the ocean slowly releases the partner it’s finally found, the one that knows its song before it does. She has a favorite song she wants to be a part of once more, together with them, before she sinks below to add her music to the wave’s.

Oh wow! This was beautiful and sensual and just lovely. Comparing everything to a dance and to music works VERY well and you capture the spirit of Merry and of the Straw Hat crew wonderfully.

really made this for me. It seems like something Merry could very well have been thinking as she raced towards her nakama at Enies Lobby.
