A Game of Make-Believe
Oct. 30th, 2006 01:41 pmI'm going to pretend this is any good and post it anyway.
Title: A Game Of Make-Believe
Word Count: 227
Topic: Pretend
Pairing: San->Lu
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: I don't own them
There’s a little game he learned from Luffy, just a little make-believe, but it may be the most important thing the captain ever taught him. It’s the lesson that everyone learns through association with the boy: how to be invincible and immortal with your nakama by your side.
Battered and bruised, they face down monsters and gods without failing.
Bloody and broken, they come out triumphant when they should have fallen.
It’s easy to pretend. Adrenaline and endorphins drown his pain, and his black clothing hides almost all of the blood. He tells himself the tightness in his chest is from watching his captain fight and not being able to do anything. He can’t do anything except keep standing, for Luffy’s sake. So he stands and pretends he can’t feel the cold creeping up his legs and hands.
And when Luffy smiles at them triumphantly with that light in his expression that tells them all he did it for them, with them, he pretends his love is special. He pretends that Luffy’s eyes linger on him for just a moment longer than it does on Zoro, or Usopp, or Chopper.
Sanji smiles back, brilliant and warm like the sun he’s trying so hard to emulate before Luffy’s gaze moves on and he collapses like a candle blown out in a storm.
It’s just a game of make-believe.
