Punishment and reward are reflections of each other, and like all reflections they look startlingly similar. There is confusion sometimes, fumbling in the dark you reach for one and when the lights turn back on you find yourself doling out the wrong side.
He thinks this must be the reason that he is welcomed back with open arms. He left, after all. There should be no ready welcome for him, there should be harsh words, harsh touches. He waits for the initial euphoria to wear off, and the reaction he deserves to land upon him.
He waits for the caresses he craved when he left to stop. The fingers that trail down his body as a familiar voice whispers things into his ear late at night seem to bear no reproach, nor do the soft kisses laid across his brow, on the tip of his nose, on the corner of his mouth, flush on his lips. He doesn't understand. He wants the anger. He deserves it, demands a punishment for the things he did and said. For putting a ship above his family.
He doesn't sleep much, spending his time reflecting on his windfall reward. He looks at the innocent face laid beside him and thinks back to the face in the middle of a battle. The cool, calculation that goes into every move, every punch designed to cause the most pain.
Perhaps, he muses, this is a punishment. Because now he's doubting the love his friends give him, doubting himself, doubting Luffy's feelings for him because they seem able to change depending on the circumstances.

Date: 2006-11-19 10:25 am (UTC)....THIS IS GOOD, BUT IT KIND OF REALLY HURTS. LIKE THE DRABBLE ITSELF.
.....THIS IS TOTALLY CANON FOR ME. LUFFY/USOPP IS CANON LUV, WHUT.
Argh. How did you cram so much pain and love and... and everything else inbetween, and the quiet hateful self-directed anger Usopp's bottling up inside while Luffy keeps right on being Luffy and... and arrrrrrrgh. T_______T
This is so, so good.

Excellent stuff, though the romantic in me wants Luffy to reassure him somehow? Though, taking into account that this is Luffy we're talking about, I wonder how that would work....
