I didn’t need to turn around to know he was injured. The heavy scuff-squish of blood filled boots and the clatter of metal as a katana slipped his fingers were enough. My own victories sprawled across the deck, bruise-black ribs and crushed jaws. His, I knew, would be in bleeding pieces. He didn’t sound to be in much better shape.
“Dumbass,” I muttered, rummaging in my shirt pocket for an unbent cigarette, refusing to look over my shoulder.
“Shut up.” His voice was hard, tight. He was too good at disguising pain.
Not that I cared. Nursing was Chopper’s job.
