There was no one to blame but himself. After all, it had been his choice to go along with that simpering fool of a junior despot. A mere thirty days without food, water, or a comfortable napping position should have caused only the most minor of discomforts. He hadn’t counted on how draining it was to have no outlet for his pent up rage and frustrations. How the occasional beatings, the casual spitting, the continual taunting would manage to get on his nerves, leaving them frayed after all this time. And the little girl, how she kept coming despite the threats to her life. His utter inability to protect her in his current state was the most tiring of all.

But relief finally arrived, in the form of a stubborn, gangly young man in a straw hat. Freedom was invigorating. He could feel the strength surging back into his limbs as he caught his swords. And it was with great relish that he took out the squadron of marines, watching as a single solid punch brought down their commander. In the end, it was a matter of moments to bring a halt to the troubles of the island. Now all he really wanted was a nap, but the stretchy young captain wanted lunch, and he’d promised to follow. Somehow he doubted that sleep would be quite as high on his list of priorities from now on, in light of his new companion’s overall exuberance. But that energy was infectious, and he wasn’t as tired as he had thought.
