“Idiot, why the hell did you go diving off the side like that?”
Luffy coughed and sputtered, waterlogged as the two flopped down on to the deck. Zoro growled as he sat up and wrung the bottom of his last clean shirt; just more laundry for him to wash today, no thanks to the spontaneous lunacy of his captain.
Luffy pushed himself, panting as he finally managed to clear the water from his throat.
“Ahhh, I thought I was gonna die,” the boy captain sighed in relief.
“That’s why you shouldn’t go jumping off the ship, dumbass!”
“But Zoro’s bandana fell off the clothesline. I had to save it,” Luffy answered, holding up the soaked black cloth in his defense.
Zoro blinked, Luffy’s statement—spoken as if it was the most natural thing in the world for him to place himself in danger for the sake of a tattered piece of headwear—taking him by surprise.
He accepted the bandana, staring at it in his hand before drawing it back in a fist and clocking the rubber pirate over the head.
“Moron, don’t go risking your life for something like this!” Zoro growled, though his voice lacked any real ire, “I can always replace my bandana. Now get up. Since you caused this mess, you’re gonna help me finish the laundry.”
Luffy stood with a pout, but there was a glint of a smile in his eyes. He’d caught the unspoken words in the swordsman’s lecture.
“Thanks for saving me, Zoro,” Luffy’s face beamed as he smiled.
“Yeah, yeah,” Zoro waved him off, embarrassed as he added, “And thanks. For saving it.”
With a laugh, Luffy jumped onto the green-haired man’s back, glad to be of help.
“Anything for Zoro!”
