Title: Unknown Heartache

Summary: Nami is crying, Luffy is unknowingly wise, and Usopp is stuck in the middle.

If she would have gotten down and dirty, used all her natural craftiness, cleverness, and inborn intuition she probably would have seen it before this excruciatingly painful and awkward moment. Really, what kind of coward throws his carefully guarded life and ever fragile pride away just to coerce another man to stand or a loyal idiot who can only stand if its to protect a man who has betrayed him? If she could have just pieced it together it would have saved her the embarrassment of tearing up at the vision of Luffy’s stretchy swollen lips sucking greedily at that absurdly long nose. It seems so blatantly obvious, as all the ‘moments’ of these two flash by her, she feels like she should slap her palm to her forehead and utter a ‘duh’. Instead her blurry vision and damp cheeks thicken the air waiting to be comforted away, made worse, or anything that would make this moment progress. But Luffy still sucks diligently, though he does show signs of confusion, on Usopp, who look like he’s going to bolt even if it means leaving his nose behind. Finally, after forever with the soft suckling noises as the only thing accompanying her tears does the stalemate finally meet its end.

 

“Nami, were you standing too close to Sanji when he was cutting onions? We love onions, but if they make you cry we won’t eat them.” Luffy states with a confused Usopp finally meeting her eyes and nodding in agreement. Now she’s almost sure Luffy is actually talking about onions, but still his words ring genuine. It’s enough.

 

“Of course not! I wouldn’t want anyone to suffer because I was careless.” She gushes, smiling until they both smile with her. Loving her nakama never hurt so much.
