Brooke glanced down at his cards, then resisted the urge to run his eyes around the table. There was never any use in trying to gauge his captain's reaction to his hand; his bucket-style hat would hide everything except his mouth from view. Bart's glasses would similarly protect his expression from prying eyes, his only give-away would be how tightly the navigator held his cards in his one remaining hand. Klaus would retain his jolly disposition whether he had a straight flush or a pair of threes.
Brooke discarded one of his face cards, trying and miraculously succeeding in drawing for an inside straight, then dealt a two cards to the captain and three to Klaus. None to Bart though, seems he was in luck. Good thing, considering his rather depleted stack of coins. Wouldn't want anyone to have to drop out of the game early, after all. Bets were added, raised, and called. When all was said and done, Bart's full house had trounced Brooke's straight as well as Klaus' and the captain's hands. Only after the pot had been claimed did Brooke raise his eyes, bringing himself back to the present.
Three mirrors sat on chairs around a small table, shredded sails fluttered on a bent mast, and dark fog hovered all around. Nothing had changed in the past ten minutes, or the past ten years for that matter. Brooke idly recalled that it'd been easier to pretend he wasn't alone on the ship when he'd still had a reflection, and dealt another round.
"Seven-card stud alright with everyone?"

Date: 2007-08-24 09:33 pm (UTC)I'm fairly neutral on Brook's presence so far, and that made me hurt for him.

Date: 2007-08-29 08:46 pm (UTC)I admit I haven't seen any other Brooke pieces yet, but this one set the bar VERY high for the rest of them. It's really, really effective.
And heart-breaking, that too.
