“1997…1998…1999…2000…”
He was doing the push-ups but not really doing them. He had done them before, a long time ago, 8 years ago to be more specific, but why had he come back to this time?
“Damn Cook must’ve drugged me,” growled a surly Zoro as he watched his ten-year-old self torture himself into the fighting machine he would turn out to be. “Won’t even let me have a peaceful nap.”
His vision blurred and he found himself in a familiar dark field. He watched the same fight for the millionth time. He watched as his dream materialized into the swords in his hands and fueled the near-death instinct he craved. He watched as his resolve formed through death of his friend and his conscience. He watched as the scene he most wanted to forget came to his eyes.
“Kuina…sorry, I can’t…it’s too hard…”
“Shut the hell up,” seethed Zoro. “Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up…”
But it wouldn’t. Zoro watched as his 13-year-old self wept over Kuina’s grave. He watched his vision blur and his mind succumb to his gasps of weakness. He brushed aside the tears but more came. Soon, his own words mingled with his dream, both saying the same thing.
“I’m sorry…I’m sorry…I’m sorry…I can’t do this…I want to stop…I’m sor—WHAM!!!”
The hilt of Wado Ichimoji rested against his head as Zoro’s eyes snapped open. If anyone had passed by, they would see no difference in Zoro; he was laid back in his usual position, completely open to a sneak attack that would never happen. Everything was normal, aside from the tears that others would think were caused by his ridiculously huge yawn. Zoro placed Wado back alongside his other blades, caressing the blade for a split second.
“Thanks.”

Date: 2007-09-17 01:10 am (UTC)I'm wondering if the cut didn't work because for whatever reason, its marked as being dark blue? Reading the source, the < and > got turned into their html text instead of the actual, which definitely is why it didn't get picked up on.

Date: 2007-09-19 05:21 pm (UTC)Anyway, this story tugged at my heartstrings. I think we all need a little inanimate object that thunks us on the head if we're being angsty...
would save on therapy bill...'probably not medical bills, but meh.
awesome job!
