In which Ace plants an unwanted yet not unpleasant image in Smoker's head

Ace took one last look at Loguetown after untying the last of the mooring lines tethering his chosen boat to the dock.  Just a few minutes to get the sail adjusted-

“I highly doubt that old fisherman gave you permission to borrow his boat in the middle of the night, brat.”

Cold pierced Ace’s belly, not from the words or the bored-yet-still-threatening tone, but from the icy/draining thing poking him in the back.  Turning, he saw his assailant’s eyes narrow at his poorly-restrained flinch.

“Don’t tell me a kid like you is cursed as well.  You can’t be more than 16.”

“17.” Ace corrected automatically, not liking what that ‘as well’ had implied.  His racing mind was connecting the multitude of cigars to the reason few pirates had made it out of East Blue recently, and wasn’t that just his luck?

“Congratulations.  This still isn’t your boat.  There a reason I shouldn’t arrest you?”  From the sound of it, the marine captain wasn’t expecting there to be one.

“I’m, um, running away?  My father beats me and is planning on selling my virginal ass to pay his gambling debts?”  The sidelong look, accompanied by what the gray-haired man would probably deny was an amused smirk, only encouraged Ace to widen what he knew was his most charming smile.

“Nice try, kid, but you’ll have to do better than-“  The rest of his words were cut off as a rogue wave slapped the small boat, dislodging the jutte for the split-second Ace needed to slip into his recently acquired logia form.    Curses and smoky tendrils hounded him for several hours, until what looked to be a raid on the jail drew his pursuer off. 

Feeling strangely disappointed, Ace resumed his theft of the boat and set sail for Reverse Mountain.
