Title: A Man's Way
Topic: road
Word Count: 300
Rating: PG?
Pairing: Zoro->Usopp; Usopp->Kaya; Sanji/Zoro; other background pairings
Disclaimer: Characters and setting? Not mine. Probably just as well. Really.
Summary: He doesn't believe in gods, but that doesn't mean he doesn't believe.
Notes: Someone once told Zoro the story of Little Red Riding Hood, apparently.
Also, this is Tesseract Arc. Happens shortly after "Contemplation" (although there's probably another drabble or so in between the two yet to come -- RSN, I promise).
Previous parts, in order of events: "Close Your Eyes", "Eyes Wide Open", "Number One, Baby", "Dangerous Game", "See No Evil", "No Good Deed", "Hear No Evil", "Speak No Evil", "...Goes Unpunished", "Intervention", "Two Sides of the Story", "Turning Point", "Culmination", "Break Down", and "Dissolution".
~~~
The way of the swordsman was simple, straightforward. You trained hard, fought hard, got better. You never gave up, never went back, never surrendered. Simple and straight and true, like the steel of a blade.
The path of a man, however, was an entirely different story.
Men felt, Sensei had said once, and now, to his sorrow, Zoro understood.
It would be so much easier if love, like strength, were subject to the will. But it wasn't, and all Zoro could feel now was confused.
He'd definitely felt an attraction for the sniper. It had been mostly physical, true (Usopp was very much his "type"), but there was also solid admiration and respect there for the man's quick wit, and his courage despite his physical limitations.
He'd kept that attraction to himself, though. Usopp had Kaya, and Zoro had some pride, after all. He'd enjoyed the brief moments together, revelled in the chaste, platonic contact they'd had. But he hadn't dared do more, lest he dishonour all concerned.
He'd turned to Sanji for relief instead, secure in the (incorrect) knowledge that the blond was in love with another as well, that there would be no emotional investment on either side in any physical exchange they might share.
He'd been happy to believe that there was nothing deeper to their clandestine interactions.
Except that...
In the story, the little girl had taken one step off the path to gather a flower. And then another, and another. Until, eventually, she lost her path altogether.
Zoro wasn't sure when he'd lost his own way, but the spirits and ancestors had always made sure he ended up where he was needed, whether that was the path he'd originally intended or not.
So when his heart turned his face towards the galley, Zoro... simply followed.
