Usually when Luffy dreamed, he didn’t dream about people. It was mostly objects, like, dancing hams, or huge laughing trees, or that one about the island completely made up of candy. He really liked that one.
So it was weird to him that for the last three days he had dreamt about Ace. He couldn’t remember what they were doing… but Ace was standing there and talking to him, real serious, and he didn’t laugh once. Each dream was like this, the only change was that Ace grew more flustered and his gestures more frantic from one dream to the next. Each time Luffy awoke with his heart racing and the words of their conversation evaporating into the air.
On the second day of the dreams he was sitting on top of Sunny, staring out at the horizon, and he thought he heard Ace. He could have sworn he heard the light clomping of his brother’s boots on the deck. He could even smell the campfire like scent that seemed to follow Ace everywhere. But when he whirled around and didn’t see him, and when he ran around the whole ship looking for Ace’s small craft, that just had to be hitched to the side, he realized that he must have been mistaken.
It was the third day now, after lunch, when Zoro approached him. His first mate had a letter in his hand.
“It was addressed to all of us… so Nami opened it.”
It was then, Luffy realized, that the ship had gone completely silent, like the dead, and he knew.
He took the letter with a trembling hand, not noticing Zoro slip away, or the muffled little whimpers Chopper was making, and he squeezed it tightly in his fist, pulled his hat over his face, and cried.
