It was a sin, or so his faith professed. He’d always felt this particular tennet to be rather unfair. After all, it was basic human nature to want. Besides, it seemed as though it was impossible not to sin. Who hadn’t occasionally wished they were someone else - envied others for their treasures, or friends, or their very lives?
Sometimes he wished he’d listened to his mother, left the shop to become a priest. But instead he’d followed the large quiet man with more knowledge in his head than in all the books in his family’s store. And then he’d met the captain; a jumble of contradictions contained behind a brilliant grin. He’d learned quickly of what was between the two: grumbling and joking, laughter and insight and cunning, endless games of chess and checkers, a passion that simmered just below the surface.
The holy texts were no help. It was wrong to be desirious of what they had. But when one wanted the bad as much as the good, the pains and problems with the fun and calm, when one had progressed so far beyond mere jealousy and base desire to longing deep within one’s soul, there was no help left. He was doomed to hell for many things, but somehow he felt this pure want above all condemned him. And yet, sometimes as he spoke to his god late at night, if it didn’t redeem him as well.
