Title: Absence makes the heart grow fonder...

Topic: Captivity
Pairing: Sanji/Ace
When he heard it through the Grand Line Grape Vine his heart dropped coldly into his gut, his chest contracted and his breath caught in his throat as though it were the last he would ever take.
He should have told Luffy, but some part of him wanted to spare his captain, no, his friend, the anxiety that he himself was experiencing. The blonde wrung his hands, a habit he had developed since Ace had been apprehended. No, bad enough that he was driving himself near mad with worry, he would not do that to the man who was practically his brother-in-law.
As the small piece of paper in Luffy's hand had began to burn forebodingly he nearly told him to about turn the ship and take them back and to Impel Down. Hell, as he watched the paper smoulder he barely restrained himself from grabbing Nami's waver and hightailing it back there himself - Impel Down's reputation be damned.
Of course, the only reason he hadn't was because the paper had stopped burning, small comfort as it was. That small comfort wasn't enough to keep his own mind from concocting various horrible scenarios, each as gruesome as the last.
Because at the end of each dream, despite the reassurance of that small white leaf, that one terrifying fact remained...there's a lot a man can live through.
So he made a vow to himself, and to his lover, that if the worst ever did happen, he would hunt down Blackbeard himself, and then Whitebeard, and then any of those who had raised a hand against Ace in that hellish place.
In the meantime though, he would look after his lover's brother, as promised. And if Luffy noticed the cook sometimes served him Ace's favorites instead then he had more discretion than he was given credit for.
