Small nugget of sadness.
Sep. 2nd, 2008 10:19 pmI know I can't post anything for my own topic, and this doesn't have anything to do with it anyway.
I just thought I'd share.
Title: Mourning

Topic: off
Word count: 296
Paring: Smo/Ace
Warnings: Mention of character death.
Smoker didn’t attend the brat’s trial, although he had an official summons.
He didn’t have to- it was all over the papers, down to the very last detail.
He wasn’t at the funeral either, although he had an invitation straight from Vice Admiral Garp.
He didn’t have to, he knew what he’d find- a weeping Strawhat, drunken Red Haired, enraged Whitebeard, assorted nakama, and Vice Admiral Garp indiscriminately wielding his “Fist of Love” throughout the assembly.
There would be no comfort for him there, nothing but angry eyes and accusing stares.
Tashigi’s heartsick glances were torture enough.
Some people, Strawhat and Garp included, might not blame him. But some would.
They’d been the brat’s friends after all.
They didn’t understand.
He didn’t want to explain.
Why he was there. Why he wasn’t there. Why he hadn’t done… what?
So he turned to the one thing that never failed him- the sea.
Plotting a course for nowhere and sailing for days beneath the relentlessly cheerful sun, finding a kind of numb solace in the darkness of his cabin and gazing out his porthole at the endless blue horizon stretching away in the distance…
Trying to ignore the scorched handprints on either side of that porthole, and mourning the loss of something unidentifiable.

Until the day a lone sail was sighted on the horizon that sent Tashigi careening into his cabin with a wild look in her eyes that that drew him out, blinking into the sun, just in time to see a bedraggled mop of dark hair and freckled grin materialize on his deck.
“Hey Taisa.” Ace said with a slow grin, sliding into his arms with the ease of long familiarity. “Didja miss me?”
I just thought I'd share.
