The galley went first; smoke is still rising from the smash of wood and glass. The crow’s nest lies across what used to be the lawn. If he turned his head, he would see a tangle of mast and rigging and uprooted trees. He would see blood. He doesn’t turn. He’s already seen.

He sits cross-legged on freedom’s smiling figurehead and watches the ocean rise up to meet him.
