"Come here, son. Do you see that part of the statue with the image of a little ship on it?” He nudged his two-year-old’s shoulder, pointing.
“Yes, dad. Is that father’s statue?” the boy asked.
He smiled and sighed. “Yes indeed, son. That’s what your father looks like. He’s beautiful, isn’t he?”
His son turned his body in the direction of the statue, as if to point out the part he was looking at. “I like his face, dad. It’s the same as mine!”
He couldn’t help laughing at that. “Yes. You have your father’s face, my son…”
Suddenly, he saw his son’s face turn gloomy.
“What’s the matter, kiddo? Is there something troubling you?”
His son stayed silent for a moment, before answering. “Dad? Why did they build father’s statue here? Why not back in our hometown?”
Ah, I see…
He straightened, and mover closer to his boy, wishing he could hug his kid.
“Well, son. They built your father’s statue here because this is the place he chose to sink. You know how he was famous for his strength during that time. Although he was pretty beat up during the last hours of his life, he still tried desperately to help his nakama. He chose to live until he could make sure that they were all safe and in one piece. Then, every citizen on the island who knew about his heroism wanted to honor his choice by building his statue here. They were honored that your father chose this spot, so very close to their island, to rest in peace…”
After the explanation, his son fell silent once again.
“…But, I wish that his statue was nearer to our hometown, dad. That way, I could visit his grave more often…”
Hearing that caused his heart to clench, and he tried to move even closer to his child. Tried to reassure him.
“Just let me know when you want to visit him. I’ll bring you whenever you want, son.” He paused, before adding, “Besides, this island is also home, to us.”
His son looked at him with confusion written all over his face.
He chuckled. “Do you know about all of those great people who rode with us on our journey?” He asked.
His son being swinging by the wave, as if he nodded enthusiastically. “Yes! The Pirate King and his crew!”
“Yes, them. Well, you could say that every island that they docked at have become a sort of home for them. All of the people from those islands were so grateful for the Pirate King and how he and his crew helped them in their time of need. They always welcome them warmly whenever they visit. That’s why these islands are partly our homes as well.”
“… Then, father must be happy resting here, right?” his son asked, searching for assurance. His face was still aimed in the direction of the statue.
His smile widened before answering his son. “Yes. Your father, although he came from a very small island, lived a life of luxury as a little ship. But, at the end of his life, he was an adult with great experience and strength.”
The boy bumped against his body, for want of shaking his arm.
“Dad! Can I be like father too someday? I mean, I’m already an adult… all of my friends say that we can call ourselves adults when we see two people making out. Well, yesterday I saw the cook and swordsman from the Pirate King’s crew making out in my back seat when they went shopping for groceries! And then I saw them licking each other, and – !”
His son continued talking, but he didn’t hear it anymore. He suddenly got dizzy, and deep in his heart he wished that his son wasn’t growing up that fast. Sighing, he pointed his eyes in the direction of his lover’s statue, and sighed again. Realized that his self confidence in face up with today’s youth ways of thinking, all at once got sinked, right now.
Merry, I wish you were still alive. With you here with me, it’d probably be slightly easier to give a lesson in sex education to our son...
