Fukurou is the first to leave. He’s got a brother in Peach Lovely who runs a day spa (which sounds like the biggest bag of rumour-holding ever) and a standing job offer as a towel boy at the mud baths. They all walk with him to the docks and stay to watch his ship depart. The following week, Jyabura announces he’s heading for the New World.
Blueno waits. He waits until Kaku wanders off in the same general direction Jyabura took, until Kumadori decides to track down his mother (who is apparently alive and well and killing things), and then he shakes hands with Lucci and Kalifa and does something he’s never attempted before: he opens a door to the other side of the world… which turns out to be South Blue.
There’s not much call for out-of-work assassins on Last Chance Island, but there is a “Help Wanted” sign in the Skinny’s Bar window. Blueno pushes the door to and walks through it. Almost a year later, a man wearing a pink jacket and white pom-poms on his head arabesques in and asks if Blueno knows how to make an Octopar. Blueno fills a stein with lager and hands it to one of his regulars before saying, “No. But,” he continues as the strange (in more ways than one) man’s grin droops, “you could tell me.”
The last time Blueno saw that many teeth in one mouth, a Sea King had just tried to eat him. “Fabulous idea! The storm that blew me off course must have been fated. This friendship is obviously meant to be!”
It’s certainly possible. After rubber monkeys, octopus parfaits and Bon Clay, Blueno has a hard time believing anything is impossible.
