Notes: Follows on the Smoker x Ace doujinshi "Q" by Hori Tomoki, scanlated and placed on the Smoker x Ace community a while ago.

“I just thought,” Ace said mildly, his voice all but vibrating from suppressed hilarity, “That we could try something different.”

Smoker continued to stare fixedly at the newspaper, now crumpled tight in his fists, the small text blurring together under the weight of the marine’s concentration. His knuckles were white, his cigars nearly bitten through, but his fragile, D-infected sanity was being preserved by half an inch of finance and sports.

“You look fucking ridiculous.”

“But you’re not even looking anymore.” Ace was turning up the whine, which tended to be tinderbox effective. The paper dented under the weight of a beardless chin and an irrepressible, impish smirk. “Neh? Neh?”

“I take that back, you’re ridiculous.” Smoker snarled, jerking the paper back and restraining the urge to roll it up and smack the pirate with it (the last time he’d done that, Ace had segued into very inappropriate suggestions involving leashes and chains that had Smoker look askance at dogs for a goddamn week). “Forget it, I’m leaving.”

“But I just wanted to pay you back for getting the couch-”

Smoker scowled. It was true that he’d gotten (as an afterthought, he would later stress) a little more furniture for the apartment where they met on the sly after he’d had that talk with Ace, but he certainly hadn’t envisaged repayment of any sort other than their usual throw downs.

And somewhere along the Grand Line, Ace had mastered the art of looking like a kicked spaniel.

The marine sighed and scratched his short-cropped hair. “Did you have to get it in orange?”

“Matches my hat.” Sensing a change in the tides, Ace perked up visibly.

“Lace?”

“Thought you’d probably go for that sort of thing, junsho… ouch!”

“WHAAT?”

“Marco said repressed officers tend to… eeh, where are you going?”
