Topic: Kindness
Word Count: 178
Rating: G
Pairing: SmoAce
Disclaimer/Warnings: Um... angst? And death-fic? I have no idea why, because I'm in a fairly good mood, but never mind.
Summary: Selective blindness rarely ends well.
The thing about favors is that you need to reciprocate. One act of kindness towards you leads to you owing that person a debt (something Nami would be happy to explain in more detail, for a fee).
That's why Smoker and Ace don't do each other any favours. It goes beyond the simple truth that they want to keep their relationship separate from their jobs – it's the fact that if Ace happens to 'casually' mention the bayo-weed smugglers over on the next island, Smoker will have to give some information back. Honor demands it.
So they don't drop hints. They talk, and fuck, and do anything that doesn't make them worry they might be crossing that invisible line between Loyal and Sympathiser, or worse yet, Loyal and Traitor.
It works. They work.
And when one opens the newspaper, over a year past when their relationship first started, and finds out that mentioning the slave-runners operating in the area might have been a good idea after all, he realises that actually, Traitor isn't as bad a word as Bereaved.
