It was always the same dream.
He would open a door, which would lead him into a stark white room, only furnished with two stools and the hint of smoke, wafting in the air.
He would sit down and stare at the marble floor, counting.
One.
Two.
Three.
Always, when he looks up, a man would be sitting in the other stool.
He knows this man. He has seen him in the waking world.
He reaches out every time, hands trying to touch the shoulder that looks so solid, yet melts into swirling mist whenever he moves too close.
He wonders why he is here.
He wonders if there is any meaning.
The man’s voice makes ripples in the smoky air.
I respect the way you live your life, but I believe in the way I live.
He wants to answer but always, the dream ends just as he finds his voice.
