So maybe Kaku's right and stopping at a convenience store just around the corner from the local Navy recruitment office isn’t a good idea, but Jyabura is thirsty, damn it. Working off the price of your passage as a temporary dock hand is labor intensive, and one stupid bottle of water isn’t too much to ask, right?

Wrong, because the guy at the register has just handed Jyabura five beli and his water when a mass of white with blue-arch ball caps on walks in. After that it's pretty much them shouting and him Soru-ing out and running smack into Kaku, and while Jyabura is busy digging Kaku’s nose out of his ear and Kaku is trying to untangle his katana from Jyabura’s sash, some Marine sergeant with a few more smarts than usual yells, “Attack!” and that’s when Jyabura’s day goes from suck to blow.

And now he’s sore and panting and standing on a pile of bodies, and Kaku’s frowning at the red dripping off his swords. And Kaku bends down and wipes his katana on the closest white uniform and says, “See? This is why we can’t have nice things.”

Which is just about the stupidest thing ever, so Jyabura jumps off his pile and grabs Kaku and kisses him hard and for a long time, just to make sure he doesn’t say something even stupider. By then there are more Marines because there are always more Marines, the bastards are like cockroaches that way, and there’s more running and shouting but when he thinks about it afterward, Jyabura decides he doesn’t mind. Because there are different brands of suck and even though your day started out one kind, that doesn’t mean it won’t end up another.
