The Fruit of His Character
Sep. 15th, 2004 12:50 pmTitle: The Fruit of His Character
Rating: G
Pairing: Well, Usopp/Luffy may be inferred.
Wordcount: 300
Summary: No one actually dares touch Nami's trees, but there are other ways to peel citrus...or are there? Yes, there are. According to this.
Note: I was having fun and wanting to get wordy, so it was hard to get the WC down. Thank beezus I was in something of a hurry (quel surpris), or things would have really gone whimsical.
For hours the Going Merry'd sat becalmed, and the crew was following her lead. Nami was up with her charts, Usopp was on watch, Zoro was exercising, and Sanji was in the kitchen. Even Luffy was quiet, sitting just as calmly as could be perched on the length of railing opposite the entrance to the galley.
By and by Zoro finished his exertions and came down the steps from the stern. He approached his captain and saw at once how it was. Luffy was looking up at Nami's grove. "It's no use in this kind of weather," he grunted, "Or any kind. Those trees are as stubborn as that woman."
Luffy vibrated, not inclined to listen to that sort of talk. "That's the one I'm going to eat!" He pointed to orange that looked very much like the others. Zoro rolled his shoulders.
"I'm taking a shower," he said phlegmatically, and went to do so. If anyone could wish fruit down from the tree it was Luffy D. Monkey, but Zoro wasn't holding out to see it happen.
The deck fell quiet again, aside from the usual sounds of a ship at sea. Sanji's pots could be heard from the galley now and then, so that Luffy's ears twitched, but he kept his eyes fixed on his goal. The wavery yellow sun, taking its time with it, slid just a little further west.
Before long there happened a little breeze made a little rustle--and just when it seemed like nothing at all, that very fruit dropped right down. Luffy jumped up and caught it, feet curving to the traverse as he swayed, fingers curled around the fruit and face curled into a smile.
Up in the crow's nest, Usopp pocketed his slingshot, grinning the same grin as his captain.
