Topic: alternative
Word Count: 300

Pairing: San->Zo, Zo->Us, and various
Disclaimer: Characters and setting? Not mine. Probably just as well. Here, have them back...
Summary: Just yesterday, everything had been progressing nicely; today, it hung all akilter.
Excuse: Should I have one?
Notes: This belongs to the Tesseract Arc, of which there are now 23 drabble entries, so I'll spare y'all the extended link list. Most of the drabbles are linked, in order, at the top of "Brave Words", and the next two after that are "Clarification", and "Revelations". This one comes after all those.

She knocks first, before slipping into the galley. Yes, she's female, but reflexes are reflexes, and she isn't a certain swordsman. He is on the foredeck, and Sanji's face is turned towards him like the needle of a log pose, even through several intervening bulkheads.
"Excuse me, Cook-san?"
"Wha-- Oh, Robin-chan, what can I get for you?"
She shakes her head with a smile. "Are you alright?"
Sanji waves off her question with a half-hearted protest that of course he is, since his fairest darling--
"Cook-san," she interrupts, stepping forward and using her greater height to look down into his eyes. He swallows -- not the nervous swallow the sudden closeness should bring, but one that speaks of pulling himself together by will alone. "What happened?"
He closes his eyes, desperation and resignation chasing each other across his features.
"You still love me, I know. But you love him too, and he... Well, I suppose that's the problem. Please, tell me?"
His eyes fly open at her calm acceptance, and then, as if she has broken the support pillar of a castle's tower, he crumbles into halting words.
He'd started... No, Zoro had started things as a matter of convenience, because each, presumedly, loved another. And Sanji, Robin now learns, perpetuated that lie himself. They could, probably, have worked through that, even, except... It is a small ship, and they were seen, by the most unfortunate person possible. It has been a harrowing hour since, and now, knowing Sanji's deception, the swordsman has retreated to his sanctuary and is training.
"Ah," is all Robin can find to comment. "Perhaps he will--"
"I lied to him, Robin-chan. I... How can he..."
"Ah, but Cook-san, what else could you have done?"
"I," he begins, then stops, staring off towards the foredeck again.

Date: 2008-12-11 02:57 am (UTC)I love how Robin becomes his confidante. She's perfect for it; she's quiet and won't ever let on that she knows more than she does. ^__^

Date: 2008-12-11 04:55 am (UTC)Poor Sanji really does need someone, doesn't he? Robin just seemed like the one most likely to understand and sympathize... :)
Glad you're enjoying!

Date: 2008-12-11 05:00 am (UTC)She's very mature and full of strength. Robin is definitely good to lean on and pour your heart out to, if it's needed.
Of course, I love all your work XD
I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping this ends in a happy ZoSan way >_>no subject
Date: 2008-12-11 12:07 pm (UTC)That is, indeed, the plan, yes. :) and you're welcome! *pleased grin*
As to how it ends, I suppose that depends in part on how the prompts come in and which ones my bunnies find tasty... :S
but I'd kinda like a happy little resolution too!
