Title: On Call
Pairing: Smoker x Ace
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Prompt: Snow
Notes: Crossover with Bendis' Powers comics, which is about superhero homicides and a pair of detectives who handle the cases. :) Just read vol 1 and loved it. Does not spoiler either in any way.

It was a little known fact, but snow made the White Hunter sleepy.

He no longer felt cold, but something about the weather conditions deadened his senses, made him irritable. The holiday made it worse: not only did tinsel and jingles annoy, perps always seemed to take it upon themselves to fuck the hell out of Christmas in any way they could. Especially perps with Powers. The White Hunter didn’t remember the last Christmas he’d had time off.

He was on one call to the next, a 414 at 18th on Prince to a 122 on 11th at Melton’s, two coffees into overtime and in a mood so foul he was walking.

“And merry Christmas to you, Officer!”

He sighed. “Fucking fantastic.”

“Hope you aren’t, or him and I are going to have to talk,” Firefist grinned impishly, and the snow under his boots melted away. Firefist was one of the few high-profile unregistered Powers left, and was a shade of gray unto himself, what with his lineage and associations.

“I’m not in the mood.”

“Aww c’mon…”

The White Hunter kept walking. “You’re not registered. That’s illegal. I could try to take you in but we’re both level eights, and trying will level this part of the city. I’m not in the mood.”

There was a long pause, then a quiet, “Geez. I just dropped in to say hi.”

Conscience. Great. He stopped, turned. “Hell-”

The kiss was warm, then it burned, his ability took over, and then it just got weird. Enough that he flowed back in a panic and ended up half formed and on his ass in the snow, gasping. Firefist just kept on grinning, lifting off into the sky.

“And season’s greetings!”

The White Hunter watched him go. He wasn’t scowling yet, but he’d get there.

::giggling:: It's such a perfect world for this... gritty and silly in all the right places. Silly, mostly, because Ace is Ace. :D

One Piece LUV.

Powers LUV. (Yes, even the monkey sex issue, if only for the sheer wtf-ery)

OPxPowers + SmoAce = <3 so very, very much.

I'm still stuck on 'They killed Cutter?! He was my favourite character!" and that was about five million issues ago.

Mmm... no-dialogue monkey-luvin'. This is what I buy comics for. Mrow.

I can't remember what happens when so I don't want to spoil anything, but just wait for when Deena ***** ******. Or when she **** ******. Damn, those were good.

As for the evolution - I'm sure we'll find out. The later issues involve aliens, so perhaps something to do with that? Or magic, of course. Magic aliens, even!

(I don't like Deena either. I thought she started off okay, but then... well, these days I just want to slap her. Hard. Walker, though, I now like more than I first did.)

She used to have a personality - then she just got whiny, bitchy and generally pathetic. I really don't think the time-skips helped; I might have liked it if I could see her slow descent into general emo-ness, but it's like her characterisation took a holiday and didn't leave a forwarding address. Her time has passed. It's the era of more monkey sex.

Magic aliens can do anything. They're just good at hiding it.

I wasn't sure how I felt about Walker having powers again, but as long as they're a vehicle to more interesting events, I figure it'll be okay. Since he's had them, we've only actually seen one or two fights with him using them, I think?

Have to admit though, I'm kind of hoping he gets kicked out or loses the powers again. Seeing him as a beaten-down ex-Powers is more interesting than him as an in-control power-house. The actual detective work is more fun to read than just seeing them going around and kicking everyone's faces in - you know, like 99% of other superhero comics.

Crap, that's long.

I can't wait for the inevitable 'I thought he was an alien, but it was just a weird costume, and now I've been kicked out for beating the crud out of him' story arc. I started reading for the crimes and detective-work - that's what made it original, like The Boys.

On the other hand, the I.A. agent looks like she might be a returning character, so there might be more of a focus on proper police-work now.

They should never have killed off Johnny Royale. He would have made a great recurring villain.

I have to stop writing so damn much.

Ooh, Walker's new partner. Now there's someone I'd like to quietly stab and hide in an dark alley.

Ah, but Royale had *potential*! As it was, he was a minor character - I presumed they were going to slowly build him up, maybe make it a major arc as they tried to bring him down; you know, trying to get at his subordinates and find evidence of him being the mastermind while he runs rings around them - but no, they just had Deena kill him. Off-screen. BAD BENDIS AND OEMING.

I like nice, long arcs, as long as they can keep my attention. With Powers, they don't have a huge readership, so it seems they like to have new arcs regularly where people can 'jump on' and begin reading. I'm sure it's not as successful as they think it is.

I was desperately hoping his death would be at least the start of a massive gang war arc which they'd have to deal with, or maybe he wouldn't be dead at all, but no. 'Johnny Royale's dead, everybody! Let's basically forget about it for the rest of the series!' Wow, thanks, pointlessness.

Ooh, the internal implosion one. I *liked* that. And Queen Noir - I really thought they were going to do more with that. Oh, for a return to the good old days when Powers were Powers, and detectives were detectives, instead of all this screwing around and mixing it up. You know, rather than 'I will solve this crime by electrocuting everybody.' Well done, Deena. My heroine. I'm glad the police academy did so much for you. This is your brain - use it.
