It really wasn't that great a song, although when Luffy bounced up to Zoro in the middle of his birthday feast and announced he'd written one, no one expected anything much of it anyway.
The melody was simple enough, so he couldn't mess it up too badly, but Nami still twitched a little when Luffy began to sing, predictably offkey even though he'd obviously written it himself.
Sanji quickly decided the lyrics were far too simple for a love song, but that was alright because those kind of sentiments should be directed at his wonderful Nami-san rather than the marimo, and he resolved immediately to write something much sweeter for her birthday.
Nami was just glad the lyrics were neither sugary, nor aimed at her, or she'd have had to hit someone over the head.
Usopp, the artist, actually flinched when the captain, in trying to describe Zoro's hair, conclusively proved that he did not know the difference between ao and midori, even after the thousand arguments they'd had when Usopp had tried to correct him.
But Zoro... Zoro just listened. And when Luffy finished, he didn't look around at the rest of the crew for approval (and therefore missed their half-hearted smiles and awkward shuffling), but only at the one person who mattered - the subject of his song - with uncharacteristic hesitance. "Zoro?"
The crew tensed, waiting for Zoro to destroy the captain for the rest of the day with his bluntness, but the swordsman just grinned, and planted a quick kiss on Luffy's mouth. "Best birthday present I've ever got."
No one was surprised after that when Zoro became the best of them all at returning the smile to his captain's face.
A/N: For the non-Japanese speakers here - when you learn colours, you learn that ao/aoi = blue, and midori = green. Except it's not as simple as that, because the boundary between ao and midori isn't the same as the boundary between blue and green, so some shades of green are also called ao. So what Luffy's screwed up is which of the words for green he should be using, but it sounds enough like the confusion over colours in the song that inspired this that... yeah. Or at least, I hope it does. XD
