In Which An Insult Is Given In The Most Subtle Way…
Monster; monster; monster…ah, there.
Mon·ster n.
1. a. An imaginary or legendary creature, such as a centaur or Harpy, that combines parts from various animal or human forms.
b. A creature having a strange or frightening appearance.
Zoro lowered the dictionary and scratched his head. Neither of those made sense; he wasn’t imaginary and he certainly wasn’t made up of some random mish-mash of animals. He supposed some people could have found him frightening, but he doubted that was the problem here. Maybe something else…
2. One who inspires horror or disgust.
Definitely not. And besides, telling him that dripping blood all over the deck after a battle was disgusting was not an insult; at least not to him. But it had to be in here somewhere…
3. A very large animal, plant, or object.
This was just getting ridiculous now. How could that be an insult to anyone? It was a compliment as far as he could tell.
4. An animal, plant, or other organism having structural defects or deformities.
Well, that was it. He was going to march right back in there and tell that idiot he had no idea how to properly use the term ‘monster.’ None at…wait. Defects…structural defects…plant…and suddenly he understood. Slamming the book shut he headed for the men’s cabin, a dangerous look in his eyes.
“Oi! Bakayarou! I swear that if that was a reference to my hair I’m going to send you straight through the wall!”
The snicker from the other side of the door only made him snarl, and he drew Kitetsu and prepared to enter, swearing that after this was over the only reason he would be referred to as a ‘monster’ would be because of his technique with a blade.
