“Are you free now?”

 

“No.”

 

“Are you free now?”

 

“No.”

 

“Are you free now?”

 

“NO!”

 

“Are you free now?”

 

“GOD DAMNIT PORTGAS.” Smoker swept to his feet and hauled the pirate off his desk from under his arms, his eyes narrowed and furious, “WOULD YOU JUST-”

 

Portgas merely grinned, the little monster, and slumped boneless in his arms, his hat slipping down to his back.  “So.  Are you-”

 

“I am working.”

 

“You said one hour ago to ‘give you a minute’.  It’s been sixty minutes.  Sixty one minutes.” Portgas’ insufferable grin turned into a pout of feigned hurt.  “So.”

 

“I’m still working.  Tough.” The marine shoved his handful of trouble roughly against the deck and slumped back into his chair.  “One more word from you, and I swear to God I will kill you.”

 

“You said that la-st we-ek,” Portgas drawled, sprawled insouciantly on the deck, his knees splayed and his arms tucked under his head.  “C’mon, old man.  Just take an hour’s break.  Two hours, give or take.  You give me what the both of us want, and then you can get right back to your work.  Deal?”

 

“No deal,” Smoker scowled, and then added, “Die.”

 

“You’ll hurt my feelings.”

 

“You don’t have any feelings.”

 

“Now you’ve hurt my feelings.”

 

“JUST SHUT UP.”

 

“You get lonely when I’m not talking,” Portgas said, with a D.’s unerring sense for the absurd, and slunk over to the swivel chair to rest his chin on Smoker’s knee, his eyes wide with exaggerated innocence.  “Neh, junsho?”

 

Unfortunately, the impulse to knee Portgas’ skull sharply into the timber desk was followed by another impulse to take advantage of that goddamn smirking mouth, and Smoker hesitated, long enough for the brat to smile his shit-eating grin.

 

“Are you free-”

 

Smoker kneed him into the desk.
