Pairing: Ace/Smoker
Count: 300
Long time no see. X3
He was never sure how Smoker managed to scowl even in his sleep. But as the faintest inklings of purple Started to touch the horizon, he watched the Marine’s face for a moment, hair sticking this way and that, brow still tense in his deepest sleep.
It had been a while since he’d seen this cabin. Such was the way of his surprise visits -- few and far between. He was sure it must drive the Marine crazy. He imagined that Smoker must be trying to keep tabs on him. He was too wanted a character not too, especially considering the Marine’s interest in his brother. Smoker was usually understandably frustrated when he decided to show up for an unannounced midnight visit. He liked it that way.
He’d been pleased though, to see that he’d invested in some flame retardant sheets since the last time, though.
It was an unstated agreement. He wondered sometimes if Smoker were asleep at all when he left or only faking those slow breaths. They both knew when he showed up that before the sun rose, he’d be gone again. Before the troops were on deck. For those few hours, the ranks fell and the threats were empty, though no less acid, no less heart-felt. For those few hours, he was wanted for very different reasons.
And in the morning, he would grin to himself as he straightened his hat in spite of any tiny wave of melancholy that might lap at him inside. Because no matter how long it was, it was a mere blink of an eye compared to the timelessness that occurred within their firestorm. The quiet inferno that would always make Smoker let him slip away again in those twighlight hours, for hope of the next short night.
Until next time.
