Note: Sorry that this isn't yaoi at all. Or even about any of the guys. But, even given the current status of the manga, this was the very first thing I thought of when I saw the topic.
She wouldn’t be joining them. Nami knew this, understood why it would be completely impossible for Vivi to leave her newly regained home. But it didn’t stop her heart from hoping that maybe, just maybe, the princess would come along anyway. The boys had picked up on her melancholy, Luffy even offering to part with a precious piece of meat. She covered it with comments about the lost money, which she would miss too. It was sweet of them to be concerned but they couldn’t understand just how much she was leaving behind.
It wasn’t just that Vivi was another girl. That was part of it, of course. No more late-night conversations about boys and clothes, no one to share a room with in the hotels, and no one else to help absorb all of Sanji’s considerable attentions. And most of all, no one else to understand just what it meant to sacrifice personal principles for others. Her nakama had their own secrets, their own painful memories of the past. But none of them had ever compromised their honor to survive.
Vivi was the first person she’d ever met who had even an inkling of what that cost. Some of the things she had done as Miss Wednesday were worse than Nami’s actions in Arlong’s service. All to save the ones they cared for. Sure, Vivi had had Igaram, but she also had an entire country resting on her shoulders. There was strength buried underneath all of Vivi’s idealism, and it would serve her country well. It was those very things she’d miss the most; those qualities, so like Luffy’s but tempered by experience, which would have served them well as they traveled further on the Grand Line. Those, and the comfortable silences sitting with a best friend could bring.
Yet another note: Given the way Robin's acting, and likely has acted, she may also have the same kind of self-sacrificing past as Nami and Vivi. I wonder what Odacchi's trying to say about that?
