Shanks’ fingers stretched despairingly after rapidly departing form. He slumped across the table, a single tear trailing down his face. It wasn’t fair! He wasn’t ready to let go yet.

Ben sighed as he looked at the pathetic puddle of captain lying across from him. He knew it had been a mistake to bring Shanks. And now he had made a complete fool of himself and, by association, Ben. But it wasn’t every day they had a chance to sample the more sophisticated members of the alcohol family. Nor were they likely to visit an island as renowned as this one any time soon. The vineyards of Pinotnoir produced some of the finest, most expensive wine to be had on any of the Blues, all available for sample during the annual tasting week.

It should have been fun, had been fun, until Shanks discovered The Golden Grapes. Not just the highest quality grape in the world, not merely the wealthiest wine producer on the island, but also the most amazing beverage to have ever graced the captain’s tongue. He was completely smitten. And now completely drunk and totally penniless since the wine also held the distinction of being the most expensive. The pourer just shook her head as she removed the empty bottle.

Ben heaved the barely-conscious Shanks over his shoulder and turned to go. He could feel the disapproving stares from the other guests against his back. It had definitely been a bad idea. As he approached the door, the vintner hurried over to him. With a smile he pressed a bottle into Ben’s free hand.

“For later, when he wakes back up. I’ve never seen anyone appreciate my grapes as much as he has.”

Shanks stirred, grinned, and grabbed the bottle for himself.
