A/N: The product of being newly infatuated with this pairing to the point of no return. Also, spoilers, in abstract, for the latest arc.
Eternity
The assumption that everyone seeks immortality is baseless, and sometimes (because many of the men he respects are idiots with little to no self-preservation instincts), strictly a non-option.
For him, it wasn’t a choice.
His physical body was immortal bar any possible accidents with sea-stone cuffs-- But it was close enough. Close enough for experience.
Eternity’s long. You start thinking about your prospects pretty early.
People had the tendency to forget your age when you didn’t look a day past twenty. He didn’t blame them, it was easy to forget.
Easier, too, if they forgot.
The crew was more at ease around him when they forgot that he was one of Whitebeard’s earliest recruits. His calm, easy manner helped. He was used to the younger ones coming to him with problems. It was part of the job description.
There were exceptions though.
The exception had ignored the offered bowl of soup he’d brought as a peace-offering.
Go. Away. Don’t need your fuckin’ help.
The exception had burned, in more ways than one, its lasting mark.
You’re older than you look. You can’t hide it from me. You’re not so calm either.
Harder... Faste— Ha-Mm, Marc—
The exception had wrestled his way (accidentally) to being Second Division commander.
One more step before I de-throne you, sweet thang~
The exception was now on that platform. Not struggling. Not waiting. Not doing anything, in fact.
The exception observed, from what seemed a sickly ironic sacrificial altar, as the Whitebeard Pirates fought.
Observing (accepting).
As always.
Don’t hide away, Marco. Stay.
He didn’t like being seen through so cleanly. He liked thinking himself an enigma to brats in the crew.
But there were always exceptions.
For that exception, immortality was bearable, transparency forgiven and taunts forgotten.
And he’d stay.
Fight, Ace. Wait for us. (Me.)

Ace's just such a little bugger when it comes to Smoker, and it's hilarious to see their dynamics work itself out. My obsession with MarcoAce is much newer. BUT I'M SO GLAD I FINALLY REALISED WTH I'VE BEEN MISSING.
