Title: Together Somehow
words: 830ish
Pairing: Sanji/Zoro
rating: pg13
topic: Champion (late)
Notes: Just a silly excuse to do an AU that flew into my head.

Zoro wasn't surprised to see the large turn out at the Davy fight this year, the news had spread like wildfire that the king had died and this years grand champion would gain the crown.

He wasn’t after the title of king though. As his villages champion he was here for honor and to fight the strongest the villages of the East sea could provide, helping him get ever stronger. If he won he could have his pick among the contestants to take with him to the semifinals against the other Seas village champions or send back to his sensei and bolster his villages strength.

That was the danger in the Davy fight, if you did too well and lost, the winner could decide to claim you for their village. Well, for the weak ones, the danger was in the fights themselves, people died all the time. A village didn’t have to send a champion, so if you were here you either came voluntarily to fight all out and win or you were some kind of criminal or outcast in your village and they wanted to be rid of you.

A black arm band if you were here against your will. A blue one if you were legitimately the strongest fighter your village had to offer.

Zoro placed a hand on his swords and let his eyes trace the crowd for anyone interesting. A skinny kid from Syrup with a black band surprised him first, he certainly didn’t look like a criminal or outcast, the poor saps knees were already knocking together and Zoro couldn’t help but wonder who he must have pissed off in his village to be here.

A kid in a straw hat with a white band caught his eye, white was for competitors that admitted to not being their village champion but came as an independent fighter. These entrants were rare and only admitted typically if they had plans to form their own village with the other contestants should they win. Took guts to be here without a village backing you…he was definitely one to watch.

A puff of familiar smoke and the swordsman turned with a groan upon recognition.

HIm.

“Baratie's considered a village now? Che, convenient it's never sent a champion before now. I told you I’d be fine, damn cook. Now I’m going to have to cut your ass up for real.”

A kick flew at his head and he smiled as he brought up a sword to block it, having half expected the reaction. The tall blond man smirked slightly and took another puff on his cigarette before returning his foot to the ground.

“Like you could, shitty marimo. And take a good look…” He indicated his arm. A black band and a blue one were both knotted next to each other. “The shitty old man went too far this time. He said it was time I go find it for myself and this was my ticket out of the east. Bastard. I’m just going to have to win and take every last one of these shitheads back with me to teach him a lesson.”

“Hate to tell you but since I’m going to win I’m going to be sending these losers back to Sensei. Don’t worry though, I’ll let you stay in my room if you ask nicely.”

Sanji had the audacity to snort at him in a half laugh.

“Right, like I’d want to stay there…I had to take like three showers last time before I felt clean.”

“I think that was more from what we were doing than where you were.”

“In any case, when I win, we can put you to work right away…I have lots of good ideas.”

“Yeah, I’m sure there are all kinds of positions you want me to fill.” Zoro grinned evilly.

“And you call me a pervert.” Sanji sighed as he ground his cigarette under his shoe.

“That’s what YOU were implying.”

The blond let the comment go, instead choosing to pick up where the swordman left off evaluating the crowd of fighters. Zoro counted that as his first win of the day.

“I guess we’ll see. It’ll be interesting to see where I end up...a lot of these guys I've heard about and they aren't pushovers." Zoro didn't like the tone in the blonds voice and painfully nudged him in the ribs as he shoved past him to the registration desk.

"Doesn't matter, does it? I win, you win, we both get claimed, we both die...in all these outcomes we're still together."

"You're satisfied with that?"

Zoros lips curled up into a determined and smug smile.

"Of course! What do you think?"

"I think that might be the first romantic thing you ever said to me, jackass. Wasn't so hard, was it?" Sanji returned the smug grin as Zoro quickly lost his.

"Don't get used to it. I'll be making you bleed and claiming you by the end of the day."

"Promises, promises."

I really really like this. The concept is a fun one, and I love how in character their relationship is done.

I actually really like this! I'm no fan of the davy back fight arc in the series, but this is intriguing! Any chance there'll be a sequal? *angelface*

A sequal would be really cool! And hey, a sequal could redeam it!

How about more on the fighting, maybe Zoro beats Sanji but loses to Luffy. Maybe more on why they have the fighting and the crew gets brought together by it somehow? Not really sure but the idea was really intriguing when I read it, but those where the two thoughts I had after.
