Title: The calm without the Storm LAME
Pairing: Zoro/Sanji, Luffy/Usopp & Nami/Robin if you squint.
Warnings: Sanji meets a cannon ball and fails. No death but angsty.
Topic: Panic
Word Count: 300
A/N: This was murder to cut down... -_-U Gah! Not happy with how this turned out but meh, sometimes you have it, sometimes you don't.

They hadn't seen it coming. Neither had she.

He hadn't seen the cannon ball as it hit his right arm, but he'd heard it though; the sickening crack as the bone from his forearm snapped and erupted from flesh.

It was his silence that she found the most worrying.

She expected him to scream, cry, go into a blind rage...no...she wanted him to. Anything but that terrifyingly blank look that was now washing the cooks features pale.

Slumped and crumpled on the deck, he sat holding the arm out, away from himself as though by doing so he could separate it from himself.

She wanted to go to him, but had no idea what to say. In this she wasn't the only one, Usopp and Luffy stood behind the cook, hands entangled, comforting each other. Both were, in a sense, too afraid to go to him, and she understood. This was uncharted territory; a route she had no idea how to navigate.

Robin touched her elbow briefly, concern etched to her features. She said nothing, just watched as the cook held his arm out; as he watched blood drip onto the deck with that same detached expression.

It was Zoro who broke the silence, his boots on the deck seemed to startle the blonde into turning his gaze away from his injured limb. The swordsman crouched before him and placed a hand under his chin as Chopper emerged from the lower deck, satchel in hoof.

Sanji made to look at it again, but Zoro's hold tightened, turning it away, fixing the cook with an unwavering stare.

The navigator was stunned at how, when Chopper had reset the bone, Sanji remained shockingly still and silent, eyes locked with his lovers as the doctor splinted and bandaged the wound.

Zoro lifted the cook into his arms and disappeared below deck.

(pops in) Bandages heal everything. It's an anime rule! A LAW, even!

Mmmm, the power of Zoro!gaze. The lack of dialogue made this that much more powerful and you can feel Zoro's stare (and Sanji's shock). Interesting to see it from Nami's POV, but it works well.

It'd be great to see a Zoro POV picking up from right here, carrying Sanji below deck FREAKING THE HELL OUT internally. All angry and worried and conflicted. Zoro love.

You just HAD to say something like that where my plot critters could hear, didn't you? ;)

What can I say, it's my calling. ^^; I exist to encourage authors to write through comments and rabid (and rapid) plot bunny breeding programs. Yay!

Wow, you caught it all perfectly! I could actually 'hear' the silence when I read it. Beautifully done. &hearts

Awwwww, I really hate reading anything that has harm coming to Sanji's arms/hands/fingers/eyebrows, but that was so moving, and I could really feel the sense of hope filtering through at the end there, that determination to come through the other side of tragedy that colours the Straw Hats actions so vividly. Love the way everyone recognises that it's the worst possible thing that could happen, love how there's no dialogue, which just adds to the impact of that stare. The sparks practically zing off the page, that chemistry, the way Zoro communicates so clearly, the way his hold tightens on Sanji's chin. Just soooo wonderful. ♥

Yup-yup! Yet another anime rule: if there is even a .01% chance of something happening, it will happen. Even if you have to sacrific a life, go on a quest, or do something normally considered VERY stupid. There's a small chance that Chopper can fix Sanji's arm? IT'LL HAPPEN! It should be expected of the greatest doctor in the world.
